Factor V Leiden was identified in the 90s at Leiden University in the Netherlands
Factor V Leiden is a genetic mutation that makes blood clotting more likely by preventing normal breakdown of Factor V, a protein involved in clotting.
This mutation increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), especially in individuals with additional risk factors like pregnancy, surgery, or prolonged immobility.
